Our Journey

Backcountry studio is the result of the partnership between Ira Sizova and Nico Dubois.
Our architectural journey began back in 2014, where we met working on the Canterbury Earthquakes Repair Program. Within a few short years we had worked on a combined total of over 800 earthquake damaged homes, quickly gaining a lot of practical experience and industry knowledge. For the next several years we further developed our skills and personal philosophy, whilst working for separate Architectural firms, before finally establishing our own architectural practice in 2021.

It was essential for us to set up a practice that prioritized sustainability throughout the entire design process. At Backcountry Studio, we believe in simple forms, minimum intervention and retaining the original character of a site or home. We understand the importance of reducing costs and limiting construction surplus where possible.
